This dress was one of those ‘just let rip and see what happens’ creations. I need to take that approach more often…
It’s Burda 7625
The ‘just let it rip’ part of this make was that I used Size 20 shoulders/bodice length as an FBA and scaled the under arm section back down to a 12 skirt. And it worked!! I have enough coverage in front and the waist/hips fit fine! The top is a stretch knit and the skirt is a firmer ponte – holds everything in nicely!!
.Other things I did:
– Left off the little front bar that holds the bodice together….just whip stitched the fronts to a height I was comfy with
– Left out the zipper …no need with stretch knits!
– Made the darts a little longer….need some more practice with making darts on ponte…
– Self bound the wrist edges. This was made before I discovered Steam a Seam…though I still really like the bound edge…looks ‘finished’.
– (For now) I’ve left the skirt unfinished….the ponte is a bit bullky when turned up…
I’ve worn this on several occasions, including a a night out dancing and it was great for that!
This pattern will definitely feature again…for a work-dress with grey ponte picked up at Tessuti’s during the Sydney Sewing Blogger meet up.
Conclusion: A comfortable dressy dress! Particularly good for those nights when you’re running late …just pull on and fly!
Looks good Anne. Wonder where I’ve seen that fabric before?? 😉
Great Minds….Great Finds… 😉
Love the print and love the skirt length even more! Very stylish for both day and night, and a dress with sleeves! As we head into winter here in the UK I wish I had more dresses with sleeves. But I’m working on it 🙂
Thanks Stefpulls, the longer length works well with the high waist (and the aging knees…. 😉
Fabulous. I have this pattern too in a Burda magazine (10-2008-115). Its been on and off my list of patterns to make for ages. I do like your use of two fabrics. Very chic.
Thanks for the magazine pattern number, SewingElle! I think breaking the dress up with the two fabrics keeps it from overwhelming…
Totally smashing!!! Much style envy coming your way!
[glow] ….thanks, I do feel rather smashing in it…
Very clever! I really like the combination of the two knits. Looks smashing!
Thank you Becky. The combo was one of those inspired moments created by stacking a bunch of fabric pieces on a table while digging for something completely unrelated!
Great dress. Love the combination of fabrics. The style is perfect for the office or a night out dancing – too fun 🙂
It’s definitely a dancing dress – very easy to move in and doesn’t show. erm, the glow that exercise creates….I have some grey ponte and a bright floral knit which may become a work-version….don’t know that they work together as well as these two fabrics…
Anne, this is outstanding!! Totally high-end boutique chic! Great eye for marrying this pattern and fabric!
High praise indeed, Ms Dorcas! Thank you!
I love those batwings! What a stylin’ dress – it’s gorgeous!
Hi Tia Dia, I’m surprised how much I like the batwings – they’re just right….not too flappy yet not too tight. You’d look good in this one too.
Just stunning, lady! I love the high waist of the skirt and that print is perfectly paired with the black. So uber stylish. You look amazing!
Thanks Ooobop…I am uber happy with this experiment. The green in the top seems to work well with my colouring…as well as the black skirt. I’ve decided this style of high/empire waist dress, with narrow skirt is my new favourite sillhouette!
Anne, it’s hot. Great fabric matching and wonderful style.
At this rate I think this dress is going to be a hit at a few more soirees. You look great!
Thanks Maria 😉 It’s lined up for a few Xmas events (providing they don’t occur on days like last Saturday’s sauna!)
Great dress and fabric choice, looks terrific on you.
Hello Tulle and Tweed – thank you! I just figured out that we have the same first name!
Yes, quite a number of sewists, it seems!
Very elegant. Lovely.
Elegant is what I was hoping for! Thanks BeaJay!
Wow the dress look fab. I looked at the pattern and wasn’t sure cos the styling on the envelope wasn’t me at all …. Hmmm, maybe …..
I think this would work well for you – sleek and chic!
gorgeous! the pattern looks completely uninspiring, but your dress is fabulous!
Funny how that works, eh Anne? I liked the photographed versions on the pattern envelop, but if I’d just seen the line drawings, I would have steered away, fearing too much flapping fabric!
Fantastic dress and love the style and fit on you Anne, perfect.
Thanks Sharon….your pursuit of good fit has rubbed off on me…still have a long way to go but I feel I improve a little with each creation!
Great proportions and fabric contrasts, but best of all g r e a t d r e s s !!
Interesting thing, proportion. Now that you mention it, that is exactly what I like about this dress. I plan on trying a version in one fabric, but wonder if it will have less proportion impact….we shall see…
What a wonderful dress! this vintage look, the simplisity of it! You look geat! I agree – it is this type of pattern you want to make more and more of it…. Congratulations!
Yes Red Point Tailor…I think this is another TNT for me….(Tried ‘n True Pattern)
Hmmm… looking more at the photos I think more about buying this pattern… even thought I am not such a Burda fanatic…
Smashing dress!
Lovely of you to comment ZoSews.
Stunning! The high waist looks so good on you…you looks so classy and elegant an not to mention HAWT! I like it much better without that bar thing at the front too. I’m tickled pink that you just let ‘er rip and see what happens…I like your attitude and great results to boot 🙂
[pleased smile] Thanks Kat…I’m practicing my ‘just let it rip’ approach more and more….inspired by your efforts, thank you very much!
YAY! 🙂
WOW… this is a great look for you! Very nice.
Thanks Kerri – I do feel good in this dress…glad to hear it’s reflected!
This is fantastic! I love the fabulous print paired with the solid black on the bottom. The batwings are perfect paired with the skinny pencil skirt – very well done!
Thanks Meg – I hadn’t really thought about this pairing of large/skinny lines before but I’m really pleased with the way it’s worked!!
Anne, this looks fabulous, you are ready to party!
Thanks Sandra! This dress will be dancing tomorrow night at the office Xmas party 🙂

I have several incarnations of that dress – it is so comfortable! Enjoy your version – it is great!
It really is a winner! What did you do with your incarnations? All one fabric?
Yes, all one design. I love the way you divided the bodice and skirt. I am planning to shorten a couple to tunic length to try and wear them more. (Culled in the wardrobe clear out a little while ago).
This certainly is a winning style on you – love how you have teamed the fabric and pattern style together. Well done!!!
Thanks Judith – just enjoyed scrolling through your fabulous blog!
I love this dress! It looks great on you!
Thank you! It’s definitely a feel-good dress!
Beautiful!
🙂
Great dress. I think I have that pattern too – it’d be a great dress for when the weather turns cooler.
