This dress was one of those ‘just let rip and see what happens’ creations. I need to take that approach more often…

The ‘just let it rip’ part of this make was that I used Size 20 shoulders/bodice length as an FBA and scaled the under arm section back down to a 12 skirt. And it worked!! I have enough coverage in front and the waist/hips fit fine! The top is a stretch knit and the skirt is a firmer ponte – holds everything in nicely!!
.Other things I did:
– Left off the little front bar that holds the bodice together….just whip stitched the fronts to a height I was comfy with
– Left out the zipper …no need with stretch knits!
– Made the darts a little longer….need some more practice with making darts on ponte…
– Self bound the wrist edges. This was made before I discovered Steam a Seam…though I still really like the bound edge…looks ‘finished’.
– (For now) I’ve left the skirt unfinished….the ponte is a bit bullky when turned up…
I’ve worn this on several occasions, including a a night out dancing and it was great for that!
This pattern will definitely feature again…for a work-dress with grey ponte picked up at Tessuti’s during the Sydney Sewing Blogger meet up.
Conclusion: A comfortable dressy dress! Particularly good for those nights when you’re running late …just pull on and fly!

Love the print and love the skirt length even more! Very stylish for both day and night, and a dress with sleeves! As we head into winter here in the UK I wish I had more dresses with sleeves. But I’m working on it 🙂

Fabulous. I have this pattern too in a Burda magazine (10-2008-115). Its been on and off my list of patterns to make for ages. I do like your use of two fabrics. Very chic.

Thank you Becky. The combo was one of those inspired moments created by stacking a bunch of fabric pieces on a table while digging for something completely unrelated!

It’s definitely a dancing dress – very easy to move in and doesn’t show. erm, the glow that exercise creates….I have some grey ponte and a bright floral knit which may become a work-version….don’t know that they work together as well as these two fabrics…

Thanks Ooobop…I am uber happy with this experiment. The green in the top seems to work well with my colouring…as well as the black skirt. I’ve decided this style of high/empire waist dress, with narrow skirt is my new favourite sillhouette!

Interesting thing, proportion. Now that you mention it, that is exactly what I like about this dress. I plan on trying a version in one fabric, but wonder if it will have less proportion impact….we shall see…

Yes, all one design. I love the way you divided the bodice and skirt. I am planning to shorten a couple to tunic length to try and wear them more. (Culled in the wardrobe clear out a little while ago).
